- List of resources and guidance for both staff and students of colour and Muslims, and for white staff and students.
The following message has been largely put together by the SOCSI anti racism committee, to which we are grateful.
We are writing in relation to the violence seen in towns and cities around the UK. The UCU’s position on the Fascist violence is expressed in the General Secretary’s statement here. The Vice Chancellor has also issued a statement to staff in BLAS. This message provides more targeted practical support and focusses on what we can do as a community to help keep each other safe. Scroll down to see a list of resources and guidance for both staff and students of colour and Muslims, and for white staff and students.
We unequivocally condemn the racist, Islamophobic, fascist and white supremacist motivations for these violent targeted attacks . We recognise that the double impact of racism combined with misogyny on Muslim women, especially those wearing hijabs, who may feel particularly threatened and isolated. While there will be a time for seeking to understand how we got to this point, our current focus is on helping each other to stay safe and sharing solidarity and support with people of colour both within and beyond the university.
Here are some resources for staff and students of colour (with thanks to Dr Ahmed Raza Memon and Keithley Wilkinson for sharing):
- The Wales Hate Support Centre: provides 24/7 support to victims and witnesses of hate. They are separate to the police and can be contacted at: 0300 30 31 982 or hate.crimewales@victimsupport.org.uk
- The Empowerment Group: provides 1:1 online culturally appropriate therapy for people of Black African and Caribbean heritage free of charge.
- Diverse Cymru: offers support, services and advice to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people throughout Wales who are affected by mental ill health.
- Protect Black Women: provides a support system for Black women in the UK facing racial trauma, misogynoir, discrimination and adversity, including sponsored therapeutic support.
- Radical Therapist Network: Community Support Circles (online) open to all people of the global majority, Muslims, migrants and asylum seekers.
We are also sharing the following university-related advice for staff and students:
For staff and students of colour and other visible minorities including Muslims:
- Travelling: If you feel unsafe travelling to campus or using public transport please speak to your line manager who can explore alternative arrangements with you. You can also contact Sally Holland if your line manager is unavailable.
- Staying safe on campus: If you are on campus please use the SafeZone app and make a note of the Security control room phone number (open 24 hours) +44 (0)29 2087 4444 – use the app or call this number for urgent assistance if you feel unsafe or experience any threatening behaviour.
- Reporting incidents relating to other university staff/students: Cardiff University has a ‘zero tolerance approach to behaviours of harassment, bullying and victimisation’ and pledges to deal with any reports seriously.
- Students can contact the Students Union for support with reporting hate crime and for informal and impartial advice.
- Staff can contact Dignity and Wellbeing leads and the branch EDI committee through ucu@cardiff.ac.uk
- Helping us understand the impact of what is going on: when you are ready and if you feel able we would like to listen to how you have been / are being affected and what you want or need from branch.
For white staff and students:
- Get in touch with colleagues and students: if you work with or study with people of colour and / or Muslims we invite you to check in and listen to how they are doing and what their concerns are.
- Be vigilant: on and around campus for signs of threatening behaviour and report it to the security control room (number above).
- Get informed: It is a fact that people have experienced racism and Islamophobia at Cardiff University. These events highlight the work that the university and its members have to do to work towards anti-racism. Consider signing up to training on recognising and responding to racism (more dates to be added soon).
- If you are a manager: You might find this guidance from Race Equality Matters helpful, and this university training: embedding anti-racism for managers (more dates to be added soon).
- Meet with other anti-racist allies: so far in Cardiff those seeking to mobilise racist rallies have been vastly outnumbered by a coalition of anti-racist campaigners including trade unions and faith groups. Stand Up to Racism has called a National Day of Protest on Saturday 10th August at 1pm outside the Nye Bevan Statue on Queen Street – some colleagues will be attending if you would like to join.
- Fascists have reportedly called a rally tomorrow (Friday) at the Motorpoint Arena anti-fascists have called for a counter protest to meet at 12 at the lightning bolt sculpture by St Davids 2. Some members will be there.
In solidarity,
The SOCSI Anti Racism and Race Equality Sub Committee and Cardiff UCU
