Testimony from an hourly-paid member of staff at Cardiff University on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected them and other colleagues in similar circumstances: “We feel ignored and dismissed partly, I think, because casual staff are seen as easily replaced. But we largely self-manage and endeavour to keep standards because we believe our teaching is valuable to our students; many say this is one of the more valuable sessions they receive. It took us months to get furlough. This involved a great deal of admin but we were routinely dismissed on this. The union were crucial in getting furlough, giving ongoing support and signposting to relevant departments to be heard. Safety is a long story, but our room is very small, five people in a room that is only two metres wide at one end. We can't socially distance due to the nature of the teaching but endeavour to keep safe. We have asked for a larger room. Our risk assessment wasn't site specific and very general. We were not paid at the end of December and we feel this is because we are not seen as vital staff members. We have worked zero hours for many years with no wage increase and no sick pay or holiday pay. Recently we were told that we had been in positive COVID-19 contact. But there is no system to make us aware of this. We won't get any pay if we become sick or have to self-isolate. We would have to apply for government support.”The University management loses few opportunities to say that they take the wellbeing of staff and students extremely seriously and that staff and students’ health is their top priority. Sadly, they take few opportunities to act accordingly. They fail to put wellbeing first when refusing to give postgraduates (who are an integral part of teaching and research across the University) work contracts and employee rights; they fail to put wellbeing first when a significant number of lecturers and researchers are on precarious contracts, sometimes for many years, including on near-zero-hours contracts (this week’s testimony (above) is a powerful example); they fail to put wellbeing first when impossible workloads are brushed over and drive many staff into sickness and despair; they fail to put wellbeing first when they support cutting our pensions with their vote at UUK. During this crisis, University management has also demonstrated its failures to act according to its words by: promising all students face-to-face teaching during a global pandemic, without consulting the unions; taking risks with staff’s health by insisting they carry out face-to-face work that could be done remotely; failing to provide adequate risk assessments for those working from home and denying them compensation for home working expenses; and failing to put trust in its staff by refusing to commit that no worker, particularly those with underlying conditions, will be compelled to work on campus while the pandemic poses a considerable health risk.We want to see actions instead of words. Claiming to take our health and wellbeing seriously does not make it true. This is why we are in dispute with the University and considering industrial action for the third time in three years. As the National Education Union (NEU) recently showed us, when unions are prepared to take action, change happens. United We Bargain, Divided We Beg ... See MoreSee Less
